The Occidental Hotel was constructed in 1883 as part of and connected to the Ypsilanti Sanitarium. On May 8, 1883, George Moorman and Clark Cornwell partnered with Issac N. Conklin?, Robert Lambie?, Daniel L. Quirk, and Charles King to purchase property on Huron Street and construct the Occidental Hotel. They may have had some formal or informal relationship with Elliot & Shutts?'s Ypsilanti Sanitarium connected next door. It was either (accounts vary) Moorman's or Cornwell's well that supplied the sanitarium with its mineral waters. The sanitarium & hotel were opened by mid-January 1884.1

Samuel Beakes (1906) notes that Horace Shutts was the proprietor and manager of the hotel "for the past three years."2 This would place Shutts's ownership beginning in 1903. Mills's 1892 directory identifies Elliot and Shutts as proprietors of the "Ypsilanti Mineral Bath House."3 Beakes also notes that the 1893 cyclone did about $1500 damage to the hotel.4
