The Michigan Historical Center was part of the Michigan Department of State? until 2001 when it became part of the Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries? (DHAL). In July of 2009, Governor Jennifer Granholm? issued Executive Order 2009-36 which abolished DHAL. It further transferred the Michigan Historical Center to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment? and directed that Michigan History Magazine be transferred to a non-profit society or foundation. On October 1, 2009, the Historical Society of Michigan took over the publication of Michigan History Magazine.
