Helen Frances Gillespie was a native New Yorker. She attended Oswego Normal and Training School where she met Woodbridge N. Ferris in or about 1872, who she married in 1874. Thereafter, she traveled with her husband as he established and ran schools in Illinois, finally moving to Big Rapids to start the Ferris Industrial School in 1884. Helen Ferris was a teacher at the Ferris Institute until 1901. She contributed greatly to the success of the institute.

Helen and Woodbridge Ferris had three sons: Carleton, Clifford (died in infancy), and Phelps Fitch.

Helen died in March 1917.
